Rethinking Continuing Education: From Compliance to Growth

I’ll never forget the moment I realized most continuing education programs don’t meet the mark. With 15 CE hours to complete, I scrolled through dozens of trainings that either felt too basic, weren’t relevant to my state, or didn’t offer any real value for my clinical growth. What should’ve felt like professional development ended up feeling more like swiping through a dating app — swipe left, swipe left, swipe left.

As mental health professionals, we’re lifelong learners. Continuing education (CE) isn’t just about compliance — it’s about growing into the clinicians, supervisors, and leaders our clients and communities need. But the way many CEUs are structured today? They’re not built for depth. They’re built for speed.

In this blog, I unpack why so many CE trainings fail to deliver meaningful value and share three powerful ways we can redesign continuing education for real impact — including using adult learning theory, recognizing consultation as a valid learning tool, and creating opportunities for connection between participants.
